An extensive two-month cruise around the Australian Coast is being halted days after the death of an elderly female passenger who was stranded by the vessel on a remote tropical isle.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the excursion for a rest. The liner departed without her and went back later that day after the ship staff discovered the passenger was missing.

A large-scale hunt located her person the subsequent day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, together with police and the medical examiner.
