Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
