Government Official Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.

He explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This broader security situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
