Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
